Wednesday 4/20

Final Portfolio Website

Today you will add to your portfolio. Then check that you have the required elements and continue to revise and improve the overall website. 

 

Steps

1. Add in your 2 more designs from this year so you have a total of 4. 

2. Add 1 more design cycle project from this year. This means that you have a total of at least three design cycle projects on your page. One of these should be from this year. 

 

Design Cycle Requirements

1. You need to have 3 design cycle projects. At least 1 are from this year. 

2. Included elements are:

  • Project Title

  • A paragraph about what your original goal and what type of inspiration were you using in this design. Look back at what you wrote for your objectives. 

  • Images of your sketch and inspiration pieces. Title these sections so the viewer knows what they are looking at.

  • An image of your final design. 

  • Write a reflection on your final design. Discuss what you like about your design and why, what struggles you may have had in your design and how you created your design.

Monday 3/16

Typography Landmark Brainstorm

You will not be creating a sketch for this brainstorming. You will just be finding inspiration pieces. Follow the directions below. 

 

1. Create a doc in your Brainstorming folder and title “lastName_LandmarkBrainstorming”. 

2. Write down at least 10 different ideas you have for the subject matter. 

3. Next, find at least 5 different images to use as inspiration pieces and drop them into the folder. These will be used directly to create your design, so take your time finding quality ones.

Ligature Logo Brainstorming

Step 1: Inspiration Pieces

1. Create a Brainstorming folder and then a Brainstorming doc.

2. Find at least 10 inspiration pieces that you could use for your ligature logos and save them to your doc. Consider what letters you will be creating and finding some inspiration that uses the same letters.

3. At the bottom, write at least three sentences explaining what type of characteristics you like about your inspiration pieces. 

 

Step 2: Sketches

You will be required to complete 10 different sketches for this project. Your sketches need to be neatly organized on your sketch paper. Treat this as if you were presenting your sketches to a potential future client and have these look neat and professional. Additional notes are not required for the sketches, but add them if they help with your creative process.

Movie Poster

Step 1: Inspiration Pieces

1. You need to create two sketches. It is encouraged that you create two totally different sketches. 

2. Include detailed notes about your design that include colors and tools you may use. Also include notes about questions you may have.

Word Play

You will create thumbnail sketches for this design. These sketches are intended to be basic, small sketches that are organized neatly on your sketch paper. You need to create at least 10 different sketches. You will use the sketches as a base for your designs, so sketches must be completed! This is a requirement for the project.

Friday 1/7

Portfolio - Deign Cycle

You will add a Design Cycle page, which will showcase your design cycle for one design of your choice. It doesn’t matter if it was for a design this year or last. You will eventually have several of your projects showcased on this page. 

 

Design Cycle Requirements:

1. A new page is created that is titled Design Cycle

2. Included elements are:

  • Project Title

Menu Brainstorming

There are several steps to the brainstorming for this project. Take your time to properly prepare for your project by completing the brainstorming correctly and at a high level. 

 

Step 1: Brainstorming Worksheet

You will complete the worksheet to help you focus your thoughts and to prepare you for sketches. Create a Menu folder in your Final Folder and a Brainstorming folder inside there. Then, create a new doc in your Brainstorming folder and title it “Worksheet”. Copy and paste the worksheet from below.

Step 2: Sketches

Use your inspiration pieces while working on your sketches. One sketch needs to be completed.

1. Detailed notes about fonts, colors, ideas, etc. 

2. Notes about how many columns you will use

A portfolio is very important for a designer to have to properly showcase their work and to have a place to display their work online. Wix is a free website building tool that will allow you to create a portfolio site that is unique to you. You will need to use trial and error while building this website and you may get frustrated, but you need to push on to complete the website. 

 

Steps:

1. Select a website template

2. Create Navigation - Video Tutorial

3. Interesting Home page design

4. Build gallery to showcase design work for Intro class

 

Portfolio Requirements: 

1. Home Page 

- This page needs to catch the viewer’s attention. You can use one of your strong designs, a quote, or whatever else you think will do this. Look online at examples for inspiration. 

2. Portfolio

Graphic Design Professions Flyer Brainstorming

You are required to complete a research document, find inspiration pieces and create a sketch before you can start your project.

 

Step 1 - Research

1. Create a new folder in your Final and title it “Flyer”. 

2. Create a new folder in your Flyer folder and name it “Brainstorming”.

3. Copy and paste the document below into your own Doc. Save the Doc into this folder and title it “Graphic Design Profession Research Document”.

Postcard Brainstorming

Visual Identity Sheet

1. Create a new folder in your Final and title it “Postcard ”. 

2. Then you can create a new folder inside there that is titled “Brainstorming”. 

3. Create a new doc titled “Visual Identity Sheet and copy and paste the form.

 

Sketches

Use your inspiration pieces while working on your sketches. Two sketches will need to be completed of the front of the postcard only. Included the required elements too. You need to think about how you will represent the identity of the location through your design.

1. Graphics and specifics about how you will creating these graphics

2. Notes about colors and details

Wednesday 9/15

Branding

Objective

You will be creating a business card, envelope and letterhead that uses successful branding between all of them. 

 

Step 1 - Brainstorming

You will need to find inspiration pieces for the marketing pieces you will be creating. It is extremely important to seek out new and creative ways when creating these pieces. Take time to find successful pieces that you can use for your own design. 

 

Brainstorming Directions

1. Create a new folder in your Final and title it “Branding”. 

2. Then you can create a new folder inside there that is titled “Brainstorming”. 

3. You will then need to find at least 8 different inspiration pieces of letterheads, business cards and/or envelope designs and place the images into your folder. Be prepared to share.

You will need to find inspiration and submit sketches for your invitation brainstorming. 

 

There will be several steps in the brainstorming process for this design. Make sure you take time to brainstorm correctly so you have an easier time creating your design.  

 

Step 1: Inspiration Pieces (~10 mins)

1. Create a new Doc inside your Brainstorming folder and title “lastName_Invitation Inspiration”. 

4. Find at least 5 inspiration pieces and place them onto your Doc. 

5. At the bottom, write at least 3 sentences explaining what elements you like about these inspiration pieces. Make sure you check your grammar. 

 

Step 2: Sketches

Use your inspiration pieces while working on your sketches. Two sketches will need to be completed and all the included required elements need to be used too.

InDesign Intro Tutorials

You will be learning the basic tools of InDesign by working through these tutorials. Once you complete the tutorials, you will need to check off your progress on the Tutorial Tracker. There are several quizzes that you need to add your score in the tracker as well. Take the time to fully understand the tools so you are prepared for your first InDesign project. Your final tutorial should look exactly like the tutorial InDesign document on the videos.
